Stillwater OK Family Practice Physician & Naturopathic Doctor Stillwater OK FAQs From Our Patients
How is a Licensed Naturopathic Doctor different from a Functional Medicine practitioner?
A Naturopathic Doctor’s training includes rigorous scientific training as well as conventional and “alternative” therapies throughout their medical education. They are taught to follow the body’s natural healing process to prevent the imbalances that cause disease. In cases where disease does develop, they aid their clients in restoring balance so that the body can heal itself.
A functional medicine practitioner began their education as a traditional practitioner (such as a Nurse Practitioner or Medical Doctor.) They then added additional training that is tilted toward “natural” approaches.

How are Naturopathic Doctors trained?
A licensed Naturopathic Doctor, such as Patti Sheeley first earns a bachelor’s degree. Then he or she completes a four-year in-seat medical education from one of six accredited programs in the US and Canada. The American Association of Naturopathic Physicians recognizes each of these accredited universities. The program includes 4,100 class hours and clinical training in anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, histology, physical exams, diagnoses, pharmacology, physical medicine, herbal medicine, homeopathy, minor surgery, disease prevention, and clinical techniques. Typical prerequisites include anatomy, physiology, physics, biochemistry, and psychology course-work. To attain licensure, ND’s must complete a battery of NPLEX board examinations. As of this writing, 26 states and protectorates license Naturopathic Doctors. In many states, ND’s operate as primary care physicians alongside their conventional counterparts.
What is the difference between a licensed Naturopathic Doctor (ND) and an unlicensed naturopath or homeopath?
Licensed Naturopathic Doctors complete a four-year pre-medical bachelor’s degree followed by a four-year in-person post-graduate medical education from one of six accredited naturopathic schools. They then complete a battery of rigorous board exams and maintain a license that holds them accountable to professionalism and continuing education requirements.
Typically, an unlicensed “naturopath” is trained through seminars, correspondence courses, and independent study and is not eligible for licensing. In the realm of Naturopathic Medicine, “board certification” is not the same as licensing. They can only claim the term “Naturopathic Doctor” in states that do not define this term under the law.
What advanced nutritional training do naturopathic doctors receive?
All accredited Naturopathic Universities require 155 classroom hours of nutrition training to ensure that graduates can provide individualized nutritional recommendations. These programs take seriously Hypocrates’ adage “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.”
Is Naturopathic Medicine scientific?
Yes. Naturopathic Doctors are trained in current scientific medicine as well as traditional medicine. One of the tenets of patient care is the “three-legged stool.” This stool includes scientific research, clinical experience, and patient (client) preferences. Training in traditional medicine synergizes with the extensive foundational sciences, so Naturopaths are likely to understand why a given “traditional” modality is likely to work or not work. This empowers the ND to determine personalized recommendations for their clients.
Is it safe?
Naturopathy’s tools are low risk because they stress prevention and the body’s self-healing processes. According to the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians (AANP), “Numerous research studies of naturopathic treatments for common conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, chronic low back pain, and anxiety have shown that naturopathic medicine is both safe and effective.”
The AANP cited the following sources:

How quickly will I see results?
This is largely dependent on the condition and commitment of the client. Often people with long-term, chronic conditions experience improved quality of life very rapidly. With that said, it takes the body time to repair and regenerate healthy tissue so realizing full benefits may take months or even longer.
Does Dr. Sheeley assist with drug-free chronic pain management?
Yes. She offers a variety of safe and effective options for pain control and offers customized recommendations for this concern. These plans include dietary recommendations, custom herbal formulations, homeopathy, topical ozone and craniosacral therapy. She does not offer cannabis-based products.
Does Dr. Sheeley assist with diabetes?
As a licensed ND, Dr. Sheeley was trained in both conventional and integrative approaches to treating all types of diabetes. In Oklahoma, she offers lifestyle coaching and recommends appropriate natural supplements and other interventions to aid the body in re-establishing blood sugar regulation as well as reducing the complications associated with diabetes. Remission from type 2 diabetes is often possible with this approach.
Does Dr. Sheeley assist her clients with perimenopause?
Hormone changes are a natural part of aging. Dr. Sheeley addresses these changes first by optimizing the health of the individual. She then uses an array of nutrients, herbs, and nutraceuticals to improve symptoms. She often uses lifestyle counseling and specializes in identifying endocrine disruptors that may contribute to premenopausal challenges. This approach drastically reduces symptoms often without hormone replacement.
Does Dr. Sheeley assist with gastrointestinal concerns?
Absolutely! Dr. Sheeley specializes in restoring and maximizing improved gut function for her clients. Gut health is key to achieving wellness because we cannot assimilate nutrients or eliminate toxins without a properly functioning gut.
Does Dr. Sheeley assist with autoimmune disease?
Yes. She commonly sees her autoimmune sufferers’ quality of life drastically improve. This population requires a customized approach due to the nuance in identifying the contributing factors to their dis-ease.
Is naturopathic medicine cost-effective?
Long term, the cost of naturopathic care is a fraction of what is paid for conventional therapies. This is because addressing the cause of illness allows the body to heal itself which reduces the need for drugs and supplements Result: better health with less cost.
Can you bill my insurance?
Unfortunately we are not able to bill insurance, but our clients are often able to use their health savings accounts to purchase products.
